A state-of-the-art material recycling facility for Coventry & six other county councils, involving a huge amount of insitu Reinforced Concrete Works.
A challenging project accessed through Coventry Council’s existing yard which only allowed for sectional access around council vehicle parking to enable outfall connections at the start of the job. This site was re-profiled and 8m earth retaining walls were added along one side. The attenuation was dug to utilise as fill and then installed under the future yard. Piled foundations allowed us to complete the cropping and installation of pile caps and drainage, encountering rock on excavation in some areas that was broken out and removed from site. Due to the building’s future purpose (a material recycling facility), there were 670m of 400mm wide 5.25m high in-situ RC walls for material segregation bays to form. Some of the walls had to be formed once the steel structure was erected due to interfaces with the structure which made installing formwork difficult requiring spider cranes in some instances. A complicated automated penstock drainage system with holding tanks was incorporated to prevent discharge of contaminated fire water into the drainage system in the event of a fire. Concrete service yards with inbuilt RC crash barriers were formed as well as machine bases, sprinkler tank bases, pedestrian ramps, in-situ retaining walls, gatehouse and weighbridge formation. To add to the complexity of this job, sectional completion was required for the AI controlled Machinex Fit out with a minimum laydown area on a tight deadline. Through hard work and determination we were successful in achieving this for our client.
Initially undertaking the enabling works including the main access spine road, services, drainage, headwalls and Tarmac. Hannon Brothers were awarded the main works which consisted of the construction of 4nr new units over 2 sites.
Creation of a new unit built over previous cooling tower foundations and RC Culvert taking water from the adjacent River Trent. The new plot is now adjacent to a busy road and rail freight terminal.
Creation of 6nr new units and associated access roads/ car parks on an old landfill tip that previously housed the old Imperial Tabacco factory.
One of the first fully EV future-proofed projects we undertook. The job required careful planning to maintain full use of a pedestrian and cycle path through the project.
